Here we have Blossom Dearie’s My Gentleman Friend. This is in great shape, and has a stellar band.
I gotta say, when I first listened to it I didn’t think too much of Blossom, but her childlike voice actually grew on me, and her piano playing is very stylish and neat – she’s a great player, and decent enough singer. But Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen with Kenny Burrell just lay down the tastiest underlayer – it is a really great, kinda unknown record. It sounds lovely, arrangement wise.
The condition of this copy is great – the cover has a little bit of wear that you can see in the images…mostly shelf wear/aging/discoloration. There’s a 3 inch split on the top opening as mentioned – the rest looks pretty solid, inluding the spine. The wax was glorious – it sounds perfect to me…you might have an occasional pop or crackle, but that just lets you know you have something with a pulse. I will stand behind a strong VG+, and push NM on this – it plays perfectly. But don’t take my word for it – watch the video clip.
